Internet pet prescriptions
This is an excerpt from a veterinarian’s internet prescription handout:
We discourage Internet prescriptions for two reasons.
They take extra time. Instead of punching a couple of buttons on the
computer and printing a label automatically, we must hand-write the
prescription and then transcribe the information into the computer so our
records will be accurate.
We lose income. It costs far more to operate our clinic than your
physician
spends on his, yet our fees are much lower. We can do this partly because we
make a profit on drugs.
Do you have a right to insist on a hand written prescription? Probably. Will
your veterinarian give you one if you insist? Yes. Afterwards, he or she
might gently suggest that you don’t come back any more. At the very least
you can expect your veterinarian to be less accommodating and more inclined
to charge you for little things you might ordinarily get for free. Most vets
don’t really care where you buy non prescription products like those we sell
here, but get your pet's prescription drugs at the same animal hospital you
plan to call when your pet has a problem that can't wait for the next
available appointment.
